APM Terminals Kano sees 51% increase in cargo volumes
APM Terminals Kano has reported a record 51% increase in Through Bill of Lading volumes for the first half of 2025, covering the period from January to June.
Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen shared, “Compared with the same period in 2024, we observed a notable 51% increase in TBL volumes in 2025. “
Knudsen attributed the growth to close collaboration between APM Terminals teams in Kano and Apapa. “This increase in volumes is the result of concerted and collaborative efforts from the Kano team, working with the Apapa team to ensure that we move more volumes in and out of the hinterland seamlessly through the Apapa port,” he said.
Record gate-out performance in May
In addition to the TBL growth, the terminal achieved a new milestone in May 2025, handling the highest number of gate-out units since January 2024. That month, 139 container units exited the terminal – more than any monthly total recorded in the first half of the previous year.“Kano’s gate-out performance in May marked the highest monthly total since January 2024, highlighting a significant milestone,” Knudsen said. “This achievement reflects the unwavering dedication of our Kano team to operational excellence. By implementing Lean methodologies, standardising processes and eliminating inefficiencies, the team has successfully enhanced terminal performance and set a new benchmark for success.”
Strategic investments and sustainability initiatives
Knudsen also emphasised the role of recent infrastructure upgrades in supporting the terminal’s performance. “The recent growth in volumes is a strong testament to the strategic investments made at our Kano facility — particularly the comprehensive refurbishment of office spaces, yard and yard equipment, and the implementation of solar lighting and energy solutions in line with our Go Green agenda,” he said. The terminal recently completed a major upgrade of its facilities, including renovated gate and security offices to boost operational efficiency and safety. Future initiatives include the installation of solar power systems to power gate and yard lighting, aligning with the terminal’s sustainability strategy to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
