APM Terminals Algeciras installs solar panels with the aim of reaching net-zero emissions
Celebrate the inauguration of 2,627 photovoltaic panels as part of the Go Green environmental initiative
Today, APM Terminals Algeciras celebrated the inauguration of a new photovoltaic panel installation which, with a nominal power of 1,470 KW, has generated enough energy to power the nine STS cranes operating on the Moscow Maersk, for example. The event was part of the Go Green environmental initiative, which we promote every year to focus on increasingly efficient port business management, involving authorities, the port community, employees and their families.
With the aim of contributing to the global ambition of reducing emissions by 70% by 2030 and becoming carbon neutral by 2040, APM Terminals Algeciras is committed to electrification and projects for self-sufficiency in energy through the installation of solar panels, which have been located in three areas: the automatic truck gate, the groupage warehouse and the car park. It is next to this installation that we held today's inauguration, with the switch-on and a real-time display of the energy they provide. In total, the panels cover an area of 7,678 square metres and generate the equivalent of what 800 homes consume in a year.
After the inauguration of the solar panel installation by the project manager, Juan Jesús Lara, and a speech by Pablo Segura, HSSE Director at APM Terminals Algeciras, Joaquín Sánchez, the terminal's Environmental Technician, gave a presentation on the effects of climate change, from a global to a local perspective. Sebastián Álvaro, director of the Spanish Television documentary series “Al filo de lo imposible” (On the Edge of the Impossible), then kept the audience captivate with his experiences and his presentation on mountaineering as a witness to climate change. The agenda also includes a family day of environmental awareness on the island of Tarifa, with workshops and games on waste and biodiversity.
APM Terminals celebrates its annual Go Green environmental initiative, coinciding with World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. This year, activities were linked to the theme Green every day, focusing on identifying opportunities for improvement and strengthening the company's commitment to a more efficient, clean and sustainable working environment and environmentally responsible business management.
